Canning Contest

Policies Regarding Canning Exhibits:

Exhibits must be entered Thursday, September 13th, 2018 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm or Friday, September 14th, 2018 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the Jones County Cooperative Extension Office. Exhibits maybe picked up at the Jones County Cooperative Extension Office September 17th – 21st, 2018 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Use Standard canning jars only, none smaller than ½ pint.

Canning guidelines from current editions of the following sources are recommended:

  • USDA’s Complete Guide to Home Cooking
  • Ball Blue Book
  • So Easy To Preserve

Fruits and tomatoes should be processed in boiling water bath or pressure canner. Low acid vegetables, such as string beans, must be processed in pressure canner.

All entries must be labeled as to CONTENT, PROCESSING METHOD, and PROCESSING TIME. Label should be taped to back of jar.

Entries must have been canned between October 2017 and September 2018.

Judge officials observe the right to disqualify entries of poor quality or incorrect processing times.
